Larnach's Castle, Otago Peninsula
Larnach Castle with it's surrounding gardens is a popular tourist attraction on the Otago Peninsula. William Larnach was a prominent businessman and politician and the "castle" was his family home. Larnach committed suicide in October 1898. A bitterly contested will resulted in the sale of the house in 1906.
After changing hands a few times and falling into disrepair, Larnach Castle was bought by Barry and Mary Barker in 1967 and subsequently restored. Today there are daily tours, accommodation is provided and the building is also available for events and functions.
