As they gained a following the band hit the road frequently often playing the smaller towns. They were a band with pedegree. Wayne Mason of The Fourmula fame and Barry Saunders were the chief song writers. Bass player John Donoghue had enjoyed success with The Dizzy Limits and Timberjack as well as playing with Bulldogs Allstar Goodtime Band and The Human Instinct and recording two solo albums. Nik Brown's violin added to The Warratahs' distinctive sound.

The Warratahs' debut album, "The Only Game in Town", was winner of NZ Country Album of the Year Award for 1988. The second album, "Too Hot to Sleep" earned Barry Saunders the award for Best Songwriter in 1989 for the song "St Peters Rendezvous".
