Split Enz were the first Kiwi band to really make an impact overseas with chart successes in Australia the U.K., Canada, and the U.S. The band initially formed in 1971 when members were attending Auckland university and most of the early songs were written by Phil Judd and Tim Finn. The early material was highly eclectic and theatrical in nature. In those early days the band were characterized by wearing weird clothes, make-up and wacky hairstyles.

Judd left the band in 1977 and was replaced by Tim's younger brother Neil. He would later form The Swingers who had a number one hit with Counting the Beat and also played with Schnell Fenster, a band that included Noel Crombie, Eddie Raynor and Nigel Griggs. He has also been involved in writing film scores. Mike Chunn also left in 1977 citing agoraphobia as the cause and an unwillingness to continue touring. He would go on to form Citizen Band with brother Geoff on guitar. He would be replaced by Nigel Griggs on Bass.

Neil Finn came in on guitar at Mike Chunn's suggestion and while initially just learning to play he would ultimately develop into one of N.Z's finest songwriters. Tim left the band to focus on a solo career after the Conflicting Emotions album leaving Neil as the primary song writer. One more album, See Ya 'Round ensued after whitch Split Enz disbanded. Neil would go on to form Crowded House with whom he enjoyed unprecedented success for a Kiwi act.
