Shona Laing

Shona Laing first rose to prominence in 1972 at age 16, on the Talent Show "New Faces" coming in second behind Steve Gilpin. Her audition for the show was good enough to get her a recording contract with Phonogram and her debut single "1905" made it to #4 on the NZ pop charts. In 1973 Shona won Best Newcomer, Best Female Vocalist and Performer of the Year at the NZ Music Awards (RATA Awards).

In 1975 Shona relocated to the U.K. where she performed and recorded new material as well as working with Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Returning to New Zealand in 1985 Shona signed up with Pagan Records recording the album Genre. Initially Genre went unnoticed by the public until a remix of "(Glad I'm) Not A Kennedy" came out on Virgin Records and went all the way to #2 on the charts.

Shona won Best Female vocalist in 1987 and 1988 at the NZ Music awards and in 2013 she was awarded the NZ Herald Legacy Award and inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame.
