In 1964 Ray Columbus & the Invaders had a #1 hit on both sides of the Tasman with "She's a Mod", becoming the first kiwi act to achieve a #1 hit internationally. They also started their own dance craze, "The Mod's Nod" which is featured in the video for She's a Mod". In 1965 The Invaders toured Australia and New Zealand with The Rolling Stones on a bill that also inculded Roy Orbison. They played 52 dates.

After the Invaders disbanded Ray moved to California where he performed and recorded with the psychedelic rock band The Art Collection. Following his return to New Zealand he went on to have a successful career in television. Billy Kristian (a.k.a. Karaitiana) and Jimmy Hill went on to join Max Merritt and the Meteors in Australia. Kristian would later perform with the Keil Isles, The Jimmy Sloggett Band, Headband and Night. Dave Russell continued to work with Columbus, in 1970 he also joined Max Merritt's band. He would later also play with the Keil Isles and Headband.

The Single, "Till We Kissed" won the first Loxene Golden Disc Award in 1965. In 2009 Ray Columbus & the Invaders were presented with the Legacy Award at the NZ Music Awards and inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.
